Aleve helps relieve minor arthritis pain, muscle aches, backache and other everyday aches, with strength to last up to 12 hours. Each tablet contains naproxen sodium 220 mg, equivalent to naproxen 200 mg, an NSAID pain reliever and fever reducer. This 200-tablet bottle has a contoured shape and an Easy Open Arthritis Cap. The cap is not child-resistant.

What it is used for

Temporarily relieves minor aches and pains associated with arthritis, muscular aches, backache, menstrual cramps, headache, toothache, and the common cold. It also temporarily reduces fever.

Directions

Adults and children 12 years and older: take one tablet every 8–12 hours while symptoms last. For the first dose, two tablets may be taken within the first hour. Do not exceed two tablets in any 8–12-hour period or three tablets in 24 hours. Use the smallest effective dose and drink a full glass of water with each dose. Take with food or milk if stomach upset occurs. For children under 12, ask a doctor.

Important NSAID warnings

Allergy: Naproxen may cause a severe allergic reaction, particularly in people allergic to aspirin. Signs include hives, facial swelling, wheezing, shock, skin redness, rash, or blisters. Stop use and get medical help immediately if these occur.

Stomach bleeding: NSAIDs can cause severe stomach bleeding. Risk is higher if you are 60 or older, have had stomach ulcers or bleeding, take an anticoagulant or steroid, take another prescription or nonprescription NSAID such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen, have three or more alcoholic drinks daily while using this medicine, or take more or use it longer than directed.

Heart attack, heart failure, and stroke: NSAIDs other than aspirin increase these risks, which can be fatal. Risk increases with excessive dosing or longer use. Do not use immediately before or after heart surgery, or if you have ever had an allergic reaction to another pain reliever or fever reducer.

Ask a doctor before use if the bleeding warning applies to you; you have a history of stomach problems such as heartburn; you have high blood pressure, heart disease, liver cirrhosis, kidney disease, asthma, or a history of stroke; you take a diuretic; or pain relievers or fever reducers have caused problems or serious side effects. Ask a doctor or pharmacist if you are under medical care for a serious condition, take any other medicine, or take aspirin to prevent heart attack or stroke. Naproxen may reduce aspirin's protective benefit.

Stop use and seek medical advice for faintness, vomiting blood, bloody or black stools, or persistent stomach pain; chest pain, difficulty breathing, weakness in one part or side of the body, slurred speech, or leg swelling; pain that worsens or lasts over 10 days; fever that worsens or lasts over 3 days; difficulty swallowing or a pill-stuck feeling; redness or swelling in the painful area; or any new symptoms.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a health professional before use. Do not use naproxen at 20 weeks or later in pregnancy unless a doctor specifically directs it, because it can cause fetal kidney problems, low amniotic fluid, or other complications.
